Gold is a metal commonly used for currency as it is scarce and not easy to duplicate. It's golden hue comes from its relationship to sulfur before the Third Age began. Sulfur itself is an ancient substance that heralded the end of the First Age. Gold is a noble mix of Iron + Sulfur. The lustre comes from the nobility in which the gods produce it, and it's density comes from love that died to create it -- most likely from the first ancient ages that had fallen and had created the dragons.
