Mission Statement:
To foster creative and technical growth through open collaboration by providing tools and resources within the greater Baltimore-Washington Metro area.
The Space:
Unallocated Space (UAS) is an active hackerspace location in Anne Arundel County (Millersville, MD) that supports the DC / Baltimore Metro Area. As an open technology-based community lab, we invite you to share your creativity!
Our mission is to foster our community to "Teach, Learn, Build”. Our 2100+ sqft space is minutes from BWI, between Baltimore and Washington DC. Equipped with a wide range of tools, UAS welcomes DIY tech enthusiasts of all skill levels and interests. Our space enables everyday people to share ideas and work on group and individual projects. Our facility has resources that support electronics (soldering, circuits), fabrication (wood, plastics, metal), and is fully wired/wireless network with a VM lab for network experiments.
Our space is split into 3 areas. A lounge hangout with media and consoles to play, vending machine for snacks, fridge for drinks, and Pac-man MAME cabinet. Our workshop sits in the middle and has our various work areas and loft storage. Finally, Our classroom can handle 20+ students and hosts courses in electrics, web development, programming and computer networking.
We have several heavy duty shelves worth of hardware ranging from old to modern computers for use by the participants, small electronics, routers and switches, Wireless equipment, RFID equipment, Several other networking components, and what ever else you can think of. This area is designed to house equipment that is not currently in a state of being used for a project. Participants are encouraged to walk over, pull a box down, install the OS of their choice and start working. When you are done with what ever you are working on, we only ask that you put it back.
Our members offer a steady stream of free and public events, classes, activities, and anything that gets people building, making, and learning. We serve the community on 100% donated funds as a non-profit organization. For more information, visit unallocatedspace.org for upcoming events or contact info@unallocatedspace.org.
Membership:
We have a varied membership that have skills ranging from traditional network hacking to software development and hardware design. There are some participants of the space who are just starting to learn what hacking is and others who have been doing it since before there was a computer in every household.
Dues:
We do not have a traditional membership structure. It basically comes down to name your own dues. We ask that you contribute whatever monetary value you can and then donate your time. We have countless chores that always need to be done so that is a good way to pull your weight. If you are a student who doesn’t have money at all, we only ask that you contribute what you can, when you can. We do not want to lose your value as a hacker just because you have fallen on troubling financial times.
There are specific tiers of monetary donation that give benefits such as faster Wi-Fi, lockers, larger storage, rack space, and even up to a key to the space to come and go as you please.
Parking:
Parking space can be a challenge depending on the events hosted by our neighbors but we try to work with them to schedule events to not overlap where we can. We have a map on our wiki of acceptable parking spaces.
