Hacker Community Dinner began in New York City in 2010, when some members of NYC2600 and Alpha One Labs began to meet for refreshments on a monthly basis.

People started to invite their friends, and by February of 2011, the Dinner had quickly grown into an official event, open to the public, attended by hackers all over the city. Other hackers started a regularly meeting dinner in Chicago.

Hacker Community Dinner provides a means for hackers from different groups to meet and discuss new projects and goings-on in their local communities. The Dinner also makes the community more visible: it is an attempt to welcome curious newcomers, destroy the negative stereotype of hackers as antisocial criminals, and show the public that hackers are real people who contribute to their communities in positive ways.
