Organization[edit]
Hacker Dojo is incorporated as an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) California not-for-profit corporation and is primarily funded by dues paid by its members, though it has had several commercial sponsors - including both Microsoft and Google.
The Hacker Dojo was originally located at 140 South Whisman Road in Mountain View, CA. The facility started as being only 140A [9] but the space expanded to include 140B in October 2009, and further expanded in October 2011 to lease units C and D[citation needed], thus taking over the entirety of 140 S. Whisman. The expansion party was attended by several hundred individuals, including Steven Levy.
Because of zoning violations, the City of Mountain View blocked the use of units C and D, and restricted the use of units A and B to events no larger than 49 occupants.,[10] 140A was formerly an industrial artistic glassworking facility, though the community has put the space through a significant series of renovations.
In order to raise money to help meet building code requirements, the Dojo staged an "underwear run," on Saint Patrick's Day as a fund raiser.[11]
Construction bids to bring the 140 South Whisman space up to building code requirements came in much higher than expected, and on Monday, October 15, 2012, the Dojo signed a lease to rent a building at 599 Fairchild Drive, also in Mountain View.[12] Move-in occurred on February 13, 2013, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on February 27, 2013 [13]
The lease on the building at 599 Fairchild Drive ran through May 31, 2016, at which time the Dojo moved to its third home,[14] located at 3350 Thomas Road in Santa Clara.
We have since moved to our 4th location, around the corner from 599 Fairchild. The current location is 855 Maude Ave in Mountain View near Moffett Field.
Resources[edit]
This reflects the previous space and needs to be updated.
The space is divided into several areas: a large lobby area for sign-in, a casual hangout room that can fit ~80 people, a large warehouse-like open space for regular hacking that can fit ~200, a large classroom with projector that can fit ~90, a small workshop for soldering and physical assembly (including 3D printing), and several midsized offices that can fit 4-16 people.
There is a 100mbps synchronous fiber-optic connection via AT&T and a backup 20mbps synchronous wireless point-to-point link provided by Etheric. Meraki has generously provided the WiFi APs.
Community[edit]
Hacker Dojo is open to members 24/7 and curious visitors are welcome to visit and take a tour anytime; members upon joining receive an RFID keycard that can be used to open the front door. There's a suggested donation of $10 for people trying out the space for a day; those coming to the Dojo more than a few times a month should join as members. The space is usually open to guests from 10AM until 10PM 7 days a week, although frequently members will keep it open throughout the night. A great many of the members are working on startups during daylight hours and use the back offices as carry-in / carry-out office space. Non-work hours are more social and cater more towards events / lectures and people who want to hang out / work on personal projects. There is a regular "happy hour" on Friday nights for members to connect, and the second Wednesday of every month, policy is discussed and voted on by the membership.
