Ronin lore comes from ancient samarai culture in old Japan (Nippon). The ronin samarai class were those who had left the dominion of their lords (kings) and generally became wandering warriors -- individuals without a home. One might imagine that they became the founders of various respected schools of martial arts: Bushido, Ishinru karate, Shaolin kung fu, and Aikido.

In any event, in the context of D&D, ronin are adventurers who refuse any gods. They accept no help, except by accident of the fates. For mages only, it also means that they have no guild. They rely on perfecting their own use of mana and protecting it. Since they have no god, they do not ever get advantage dice, except in a rare circumstance where they are favored by the goddess.

Either ronin or non-ronin age according to the passing of time in the realm. The other remains outside of time with the gods (aging with hours of game-play). We don't know yet, which is which. DMs will have to experiment.
