Gems are rare, transparent stones in hardened, purified form. Their matter-origin is rooted in the tears of the ancients.
Among other things, they are valued for their size and depth of color. Magical gemstones contain an additional trait of "sparkle" -- they shine with the twinkle of starlight that can be applied for some magical power, possibly gazing into the future or other parts of the present.
Each color is affiliated with the same color in the dragons, so may have a particular magic related to that color because that dragon's willpower made them.
Dark magic found in some scrolls can be used to create gemstones.
The power that gives gemstones their color is connected to ithildin.
Each color of gemstones has a metal associated with it and a fruit or emotional force, and power when user is attuned:
- onyx: black, titanium/carbon, death; connections to the underworld
- ruby: crimson, natrium/copper, sacrifice/trust, pomegranate/apple (Tree of Knowledge); purpose
- topan: orange, nickle/steel, power of purpose; mango; connections to karma/leaders?
- citryne: yellow, brass/gold, transcendent purpose; banana, ; shared connections to human (mammalian?) heart
- emerald: green, iron/aluminum, pursuits towards the Tree of Life; sugar; connections to heart of the trees
- sapphire: aquamarine or blue, mercury/silver, adaptability-survival towards integrity; blueberry; connections to solar destiny
- amethyst: violet, chromium/platinum, pursuit of knowledge, perfection of logic,; plum/advanced grapes; connections to earth destiny
- milkstone/kyber: white, electrum, life; connections to root sexual energy
- diamonds: clear; purpose eternal; connections to mind
