Leigh Hackspace is a non-profit CIC hackspace operated in Leigh, Greater Manchester.

Currently on its 4rd iteration, it initially formed as a online only group but was quickly able to lease a small shop premises in Leigh town centre. After a few years it moved to The Cotton Mill, then again in 2019 to Leigh Spinners Mill, where it currently resides.

The hackspace consists of three units within the mill; a general working space and electronics area, a wood workshop and crafts area, and a social area.

Leigh Hackspace operates open tours on Saturdays between 12:00pm and 1:00pm GMT/BST.

History[edit]

  • Late 2014 - The first meetings of Leigh Hackspace took place in late 2014 at Cadence Cafe, Tyldesley, Greater Manchester.
  • Late 2014 - 'Leigh Virtual Hackspace' group founded on Facebook.
  • 2015-01-23 - Leigh Hackspace CIC was formed.
  • 2015-02-13 - Leigh Hackspace became physical at a derelict shop on Market Street, Leigh.
  • Mid 2016 - The hackspace moved to its second location at The Cotton Mill, Mather Lane, Leigh.
  • Late 2019 - Moved again to its current location at Leigh Spinners Mill, Park Lane, Leigh.

Facilities[edit]

  • Pi Room - a computer lab with PCs for public use.
  • Electronics Bay - a well stocked electronics lab with most things you'll need.
  • Main Space - a general use area, which doubles as storage at the moment.
  • Wood Workshop - a full workshop fitted out with most tools you'll need to mangle wood.
  • Crafts Space - Sewing, pottery, and other crafts
  • Dark Room - A fully working darkroom
  • Fabrication - 3D printers, CAD machine, and laser engraver.
  • Social Space - A social area, with sofas, games consoles, and a bar.

Regular Events[edit]

Currently (as of 2023-09-19), the following events happen on a recurring basis:

  • Tuesday - Textile Tuesdays - Bring your textile projects and work with fellow crafters.
  • Wednesday - Code Club / CodeUp
  • Saturday - Open Tours - Tour the hackspace and see whats going on.
