There is an incredible pool of talented people living in Melbourne and working on extraordinary projects. Many of these projects are firmly grounded in open-source and true collaboration. Many projects are commercial, but the participants still care deeply about passing on their expertise and engaging with the community. Based on that foundation, we're creating a HackerSpace that provides a common ground for cross-pollination and sharing of skills and (scarce) resources / equipment.
Unlike many user groups, the Connected Community HackerSpace is predominantly about doing and building your project (some or all of it) in a shared space. Occasionally we presentations or show and tell, but we strongly encourage active participation and learning through hands-on involvement ...
At a minimum, we current meet every Tuesday night, and every Saturday for non-keyholder access (members and/or general public).
We have a garage-like building of just over 100m², located in the inner-Eastern suburb of Hawthorn, with a work-space, electronics tools / diagnostic equipment / parts, machining tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, etc.
The people involved in the space varies from meeting to meeting, however there are a core with serious practical experience in hacking building automation, cars, motorbikes, robots, RC models, rockets, 3D printing, audio/video, Android development ... and many more. Of course, there is plenty of Arduino and NodeBots action.
Open-source licensed projects that Melbourne based hackers are engaged in, include ...
- Hackerspaces Global Space Program
Note: If your project is proprietary, contains no open-source components, and you fundamentally can't talk about it and share aspects of it with the open-source development community, then it probably shouldn't be listed here. However, you should consider the commercial and economic advantages of protecting only the key aspects of your venture and prepare your organization to leverage both open-source hardware / software and contributing back to the community that saves you time and money, as well as reducing risk !
