Biotech Without Borders is an all-volunteer, member-led, community lab with 501(c)(3) status seeking to democratizing the hands-on practice of biotechnology for useful and peaceful purposes in order to benefit humankind and the planet. And we want to have fun while doing it!
History[edit]
We were founded in 2017 by Dr. Ellen Jorgensen after she stepped down as Director of Genspace NYC to continue her work democratizing biotechnology. We remained in the 33 Flatbush location until the regrettable passing of our patron landlord Al Attara. We moved into storage coinciding with the COVID-19 lockdowns.
New Beginnings[edit]
We are seeking to expand the scientific capacity of our community by organizing those who can and want to use lab space into a collective stewarding the lab. To achieve this end, our lab is engaged in an ongoing process to maintain a shared lab space in New York City. Members are invited to shape the lab for their individual and/or group projects by finding consensus among each other using a cooperative decision making software called Loomio.
Values[edit]
We strive to exercise tact and bravery in articulating dissent with the assumptions that we all inevitably bring to our work. In the spirit of resilience, we discuss these points of conflict and adapt to our revised understanding. We believe that we all have the capacity to be community scientists. We like to safely play around with biology and hope you will join us in the lab!
